Large terraced eco-garden on east slopes of the Blorenge mountain. Vegetable beds, polytunnel, three greenhouses, orchard, flower borders, wild flowers. Great views, woodland walks, cascading water and ponds with ducks. Paths steep in places, unsuitable for less able.
A mountain garden half way up the Blorenge with cracking views over the Vale of Usk.
Several terraced flowerbeds and rockeries with mixtures of wild flowers [eg cornflower, field poppies], annuals and perennials.
Vegetables are very challenging to grow on such poor, droughty soils. Annual applications of compost, manure and ash [from campfires] to the terraced beds have helped somewhat, as also mulching with bracken and straw. There are tea bushes, a Black Hamburg grape vine, very productive salad crops and Mediterranean vegetables in the greenhouses and polytunnel.
Above the fields where the campers, Fly the old horse and two donkeys are to be found, we have planted 9 acres of broadleaf woodland. These woods are carpeted with bluebells in May. Waymarked tracks are available through these woods for short walks. Above these woods is our boundary with the Woodland Trust owned Punchbowl woods and lake. There are many veteran beech [pollarded until about 1900] and oak trees and the area is very beautiful.
The fields are rich in wildflowers with accompanying pollinators and other insects and birds. The woods host badgers, foxes, snakes and other wildlife. Surveys done by the Gwent Wildlife Trust, RSPB and an ecologist camper are available to anyone interested.
